It was the Weekend Library Line - 6pm-midnight on Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday. I coordinated the service from 1978-1986 (when it was discontinued
due to funding cutbacks). It operated out of the Berkeley Public Library
and was staffed with 2 librarians each evening from a pool of about 12 who
worked in the member libraries of the Bay Area Library and Information
System network.
If I remember correctly, we answered between 50 and 100 questions an
evening. We were loved because we were there, with answers, when no one
else was. We'd either answer the question within 5 minutes or get their
number and call them back that evening.
