The National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov) (NLM), on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is the world's largest medical library. The Library collects materials in all areas of biomedicine and health care and contains 5.3 million items--books, journals, technical reports, manuscripts, microfilms, photographs and images.  NLM is on the metropolitan Washington D.C. Metro subway system and is just a short walk from a growing Bethesda downtown with numerous shops and restaurants.

This position is located in the Public Services Division (PSD) which offers a range of services for accessing NLM's collection and information. Through onsite service and an interlibrary loan network, the Division provides access to the collection. A staff of information specialists offers customer services to health professionals, researchers, educators and others. PSD staff also organize NLM information for access through the World Wide, and are responsible for carrying out NLM's mission to preserve its invaluable collection of printed literature and non-print media for future generations.

Responsibilities:
The incumbent serves as a member of a systems-librarian team supporting personal computer, network, and web-based systems for the 80-member Public Services Division.  Responsibilities of the team include the NLM web site, Intranet, and MEDLINEplus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus), NLM's new consumer health resource.  The incumbent will participate in many aspects of system support including, but not limited to: developing, testing and implementing new systems or enhancements to existing systems; monitoring the daily operations of systems, documenting and training staff, and providing management support for decision-making regarding NLM systems.

Required qualifications:
Master's degree or successful completion of 2 full years in library science from an accredited college or university or equivalent as described in full job announcement (http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/wfjic/jobs/ic6047.htm )
Selective factor is "Knowledge of library systems, including analysis, standards and trends, information organization and dissemination, medical vocabulary and medical informatics."

Preferred qualifications:
(1) Skill in analytical and deductive reasoning and problem-solving in order to resolve systems problems;   (2) Skill in verbal communication formally and informally to staff at all levels;  (3) Skill in communicating effectively in writing to staff at all levels.

Salary: $ 33,650 to $ 48,796 depending on experience (promotion potential to GS-12 $63,436)
