Research Library Residency Program

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Library seeks applicants and
nominations for two positions in its Research Library Residency Program.
Designed to advance new professionals into research library careers through
a unique combination of experience, education, and mentoring, the program
provides a two-year professional appointment at the rank of Librarian I and
is supplemented by professional and educational opportunities such as
workshops and seminars.

The 1999-2001 residents will be jointly appointed to the Digital Initiatives
Team and the Acquisitions Department. The Digital Initiatives assignment is
to build and maintain a digital library of business and economic
development.  Residents will also provide instruction to users of the
digital library.  The acquisitions assignment will be either in serials or
monographic acquisitions and may involve working with vendors, reviewing
orders, automation of the invoice system, and budget preparation.

Qualifications
Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program in Information and Library
Science received August 1998 or later; evidence of academic success and
research activity; indication of a high level of motivation and leadership
potential; ability to communicate clearly and well in written, oral and
visual presentations; ability to work productively with colleagues and
library users; demonstrated experience with Web page development; aptitude
for learning new technologies and applications; familiarity with current and
emerging technologies; and interest in or experience with acquisitions.
Experience with database applications and the integration of those
applications into a web environment is desirable.

Salary - $33,000 plus a generous benefit package.

Appointment - Residents will be appointed at the rank of Librarian I for a
two-year period beginning summer 1999.

* Brief essay describing how you think digital libraries will impact the
nature of Research Library Collections and your thoughts about how
technology will impact the role of librarians.

* Names of three references (at least one work-related) who can speak to
your accomplishments and potential.

* URL's of active web sites in which you played a major role in developing
(Disk or print copies of inactive sites are also acceptable)

* Transcripts from any graduate studies including the Masters in Information
and Library Science or equivalent.
