I found it amusing and troubling that an NPR/PBS petition was once again
making the rounds on the net. Whether or not this worthy cause is
current, a chain letter like this has no business on a list like web4lib.
Chain letters have a way of coming round and round and round years after
they were relevant and providing one of the least reliable -- but most
inflamatory -- sources of misinformation on the Internet. Too many of our
patrons, faculty included, actually believe that there are kidney pirates,
or that there is a modem tax proposal, or that Craig Sheregold is still
collecting business cards.
Do not forward chain letters. Find some other way to participate in the
political process. For example, a letter to your Congressperson,
particularly in an election year like this, is MUCH more effective.
[as an aside, do some homework before participating. The funding politics
are over on capitol hill for this year; there's no pending activity to
further cut either NEA or NPR budgets. I wasn't aware of any new cert at
the Supreme Court, but in any case a petition isn't about to influence that
process!]
