David,
I'm keenly interested in hearing of any responses you may have recieved to this inquiry earlier in the month.
I am on a newly-converged task force in the Orbis consortium to provide unmediated, patron-initiated article requesting. Orbis is a consortium of about 14 Oregon (& a few Washington) academic libraries. We have had automated, patron-initiated borrowing of books through this consortia for about a year and a half. For book borrowing, we use the Innovative Interfaces Inn-Reach system, bypassing OCLC entirely. Only one of our group (the University of Oregon) is actively using OCLC's DirectRequest, although many of us use custom holdings and the FirstSearch ILL link.
While the book traffic has worked well, we are somewhat stymied in our attempts to launch something similar for articles. We are currently investigating two different models: OCLC or Innovative. With an OCLC model, patrons would enter their requests (via the FirstSearch module, or a locally-developed web form) that would arrive in the ILL message file. Then the request would be processed via Custom Holdings/ Direct Request and sent out. In the Innovative scenario, patrons would look up journal titles directly in our Orbis (joint) opac, as we all use Innovative. They would place a hold on the title/volume needed, entering article info into a notes field.
Of course, this is all very sketchy, with a few huge leaps left unaccounted for. One tremendous obstacle is the lack of standardization of union list information within our consortia (there are even a few who don't union list at all!). Another obstacle is the difficulty of a patron in identifying the appropriate title record for journals, as many different records exist for each title (microformats; earlier versions; monographs associated with the same publisher, etc).
Please let me know if you are aware of any group with an active system for unmediated, automated article requesting within the group. Thanks so much for keeping us posted on your research - we'll let you know when (if!) we come up with a plan!
Many thanks,
Anna

Greetings.
I'm conducting an informal, initial survey of libraries which are using
hooks-to-holdings to connect serials holdings information within opacs to
bibliographic citation information within locally or remotely mounted
databases -- One stop shopping: Find a citation and receive local
holdings information at the same time.
For example, the Iowa State University Libraries and the LOUIS Consortium
both used NOTIS' InfoShare product to link libraries' holdings to
individual citations within locally mounted databases such as Reader's
Guide and Agricola.
I'm also interested in any efforts to include serials holding records from
web-based full-text aggregator services (e.g. Dow-Jones, Lexis-Nexis) or
document delivery services (e.g. UnCover) into library opacs.
For example, if you search the UTK Catalog (www.lib.utk.edu) for the
periodical title "Journal of American History," you'll retrieve records
for 3 holdings: Local, Dow-Jones, & JSTOR.
The UT Libraries has implemented a first take on these two sides
of the hooks-to-holdings coin. Now we're moving to document the project
and to write an article describing the project, etc.
At this stage, we're trying to see who all is doing what to give
perspective to the recent past and near future of such efforts at other
institutions.
Any information, white-papers, and anecdotes you could share would be
extremely helpful.
Please feel free to contact me directly. I'll post a summary once
completed.
Thank you for your time and assistance.
