Prof. Libn., in charge of electronic services, incl. computers and
peripherals, networks, and telecommunications at a 4-county public
library system in north Georgia.  Headquartered in Dalton, about 25
miles below Chattanooga, TN, serving 200,000+ population.  5 library
buildings and a bookmobile.

Requirements:  ALA Masters, GA Grade 5 or higher Libn. Certificate,
valid driver's license.

JOB DESCRIPTION

ELECTRONIC SERVICES LIBRARIAN
NORTHWEST GEORGIA REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM



Under general supervision, coordinates the selection, acquisition,
installation, repair, and operation of electronic equipment, especially
computers and peripheral equipment.  Assists in designing training
programs/exercises for staff and patrons in the use of library
computers, etc.

Analyzes existing equipment for replacement, re-assignment, or
reconfiguration.

Analyzes needs for new equipment and services, particularly in the area
of computers and peripherals, and telecommunications.

Repairs, rebuilds, and builds computers and peripherals from new
components or parts, or from scavenged equipment.

Handles repair of equipment and network(s), whether self-performed or
arranged with vendors, at headquarters and at affiliated library
installations.

Answers or obtains answers for staff, board members, and government
officials about existing or proposed automation and telecommunication
services/equipment.

Required skills, etc.

*       Masters Degree in Library Science from an institution whose
program has been accredited by the American Library Association.
*       Within a reasonable time, must obtain the Professional
Librarian's Certificate from the Georgia Secretary of State's Office.
*       Must obtain, within a reasonable time, a valid Georgia Driver's
License.
*       Must be willing and able to drive within Georgia or within 150
miles of its borders for work-related activities.
*       Must, within six months, pass Microsoft Certified Professional
test for Windows NT

Preferred skills

*       Significant experience with Windows NT Server 4.
*       Significant experience with the following operating systems;
Macintosh, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 95, and DOS
*       Significant experience installing server and client software
applications
*       Significant experience installing the following PC hardware:
IDE and SCSI drives, mother boards, processors, memory, and PCI/ISA
expansion boards
*       Proven experience in diagnosing hardware and software-related
problems
*       Experience running a mail server; experience with MS Exchange 5x
preferable
*       System administrator experience with a modern automation system,
SIRSI Unicorn preferred
*       Ability to develop and implement plans
*       Familiarity with configuring analog and digital routers and
modems
*       Familiarity with UNIX command line, Linux experience preferable
*       Thorough understanding of TCP/IP, SMTP, POP, proxy (Squid
preferable) and web (Internet Information Server preferable) servers

Minimum skills/experiences

*       Solid Windows NT Workstation experience
*       Installing WinntWS4.0
*       Installing software
*       Networking workgroups (any protocol)
*       Using control panel applets
*       Know how to configure dial-up networking
*       No fear of the inside of a PC
*       Installing hard drives and memory
*       Basic familiarity with Macintosh and Windows 95
*       starting, restarting
*       using basic office applications
*       control panels
*       Experience at command line DOS or UNIX
*       Navigate directories
*       Rename files
*       Save files
*       Edit files
*       Knowledge of Internet protocols and servers
*       General understanding of library automation systems
*       Knowledge of MARC databases and indexing
