IP and port numbers

[]Could someone explain how a machine can have more than one ip address? 
Consecutively:
- different configuration files 
  used on different occasions
- DHCP or Bootp server distribute floating IPs dynamically
Simultaneously:
- each of two or more network adapters
  has its own IP (cf. router function, serving )
