Communicator and IMAP behavior

This may be a little off topic but I haven't found an answer
any where else. I am using Communicator's Messenger for
e-mail via the IMAP server protocol. I have noticed for
sometime now that when I am on our mainframe (where the
server is housed)via telnet I will get a message saying I
have new mail. I go to Netscape Messenger and click on "Get
Msg". I usually get the message "No New Messages On
Server". I then go and tell Messenger to "Empty the Trash
Bin". It does so and then I can click on "Get Msg". The
message is now there in Messenger. Sounds crazy to me. Our
computer people don't know why this happens.

Our LMAP server is a DEC Alpha running the latest version of
PMDF and SMTP in a VMS environment. Please note that the
messages are there if I read them directly on our mainframe.
