is an Irish stew of literary and cultural links to the
Emerald Isle and its heritage. It's well-organized
and visually appealing, with links to sites both
general -- such as the Gaelic Homepage -- and specific,
such as Trinity College of Dublin's The Book of Kells
pages. Irish literature, history, and legend all have
solid collections of links, with the emphasis on
literature.

White House Backs Internet Filtering Legislation

Vice President Al Gore urged Congress on Monday to pass legislation
that would require schools and libraries using federal subsidies
for Internet access to block inappropriate material from children.
"As we connect every school and classroom to the Internet, we must
protect our children from the red-light districts of cyberspace,"
Gore said.
Schools and libraries in the United States pay a discounted fee for
Internet access. The discount, called e-rate, is subsidized by the
Federal Communication Commission's Universal Service Fund, which
comes from fees collected from local phone service providers and
access charges paid by long distance providers.
The e-rate provides as much as $2.25 billion a year to connect
schools and libraries to the Internet.
The Internet School Filtering Act (S.1619) mandates that schools with
federally funded Net access filter out improper content. The bill was
recently amended to include flexibility so that the local community
can decide which filtering system is used and what content is
inappropriate.
The Internet School Filtering Act is on its way to the Senate floor
after being forwarded by the Senate Commerce Committee, chaired by
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "There is very little doubt that this
will pass," McCain said.
"The legislation is not a 'one-size-fits-all-approach' that mandates
government values in our schools," Gore said. "Instead, our plan will
empower schools to make decisions based on local values -- protecting
children from inappropriate material while also protecting the first
amendment values we all hold dear," Gore said.
