periods at end of URLs

I have a request for writers including URLs in their email messages:
Please don't end URLs with a period.

Many email readers (e.g., mine ;) allow the reader to click directly on a
URL in an email message, and to view that web page on the browser.
However, this doesn't work if the URL has a period at the end. It can have
quotes or parentheses or blank spaces, just not periods. For example,
"http://www.scpl.org/publicnt.html" would work fine, as would
http://www.scpl.org/publicnt.html . In contrast, clicking on
http://www.scpl.org/publicnt.html. results in a NOT FOUND message in the
browser.

Many thanks,
- Carole
