Yes you take the banner along with the counter. So what? It gives me the data
that I need to work with without having to pay my ISP extra to cull it. If it
lets the world know about them all the better. These folks do great work and
should be compensated in some form.

You're right, as the author of the site I do care how many visit and where
they
go. My site is designed to be of service to the entire global village but
there
are factors that I must consider. One of them is how to best use my disk
quota.
If information is not being used then it can be replaced by something that
is. 

The counter works off a graphics call to their site. No cgi script,
(scripts are
not allowed on a number of ISP's.)

The reporting is simple and straightforward. The first column is the
running total,
the second is the daily total and the third is the actual page.
