Freezing PCs

Below is my response to a post this morning - I should have copied the
list. For anyone who recalls my question on why our new Gateways were
freezing, and would not power off, here's half an answer. The power button
delay is a *feature* on some of our new towers. Paul Schaffner suggested
this, and once suggested, it seemed so simple. ;-) We have to push and
hold the power button for about 5 seconds turn shut down a frozen PC.

Now, as to why some of the towers are freezing to begin with, we're still
not sure. Maybe the barcode scanners. I will pass this along when we
figure it out, in hopes someone somewhere can benefit.

problems figured out. With the Gateways, we ordered PCs two separate
times. In the newest shipment, we have found that the tower PCs require
that we hold the off switch in for about 5 seconds before the unit will
shut down. It's apparently a *feature,* but I don't know what purpose it
serves other than to annoy.

our barcode scanners. It seems to happen on staff PCs, but not OPACs.
...And then, of course there are the PCs that may be too close to the
security gates, but that's a whole other problem (monitor and HDD issues).

I'm planning to post to web4lib for the archives.
