trashed public use computers

Look into a product called "ghost multicast" by Innovative software.
It sounds what you are looking for. It was developed by a group
called Binary Research, LTD. and the people I've talked with who use
it have been pretty happy.

Another option is to bite the bullet and get a zip drive and do some
backups. That way you have a permanent backup in case your hard drive
decides to go the way of the dinosaurs.

See? I was nice. Hope this helps.
