General position summary:
Web Master provides technical advice and assistance to OHS personnel on the creation and maintenance of information presented on the Web. Creates, modifies, and designs program information to be displayed on the Web. Works with collections department staff on automating collection descriptions for the Web and researching techniques for increasing remote user access to OHS collections. Serves on the OHS Web Task Force committee to prioritize Web content and oversees Web site design. Evaluates software/hardware for use on the OHS Web site. Contributes to the development and evaluation of departmental policies and services related to Web site issues.
Primary functions and major responsibilities:
- Creates, monitors, and updates the Society's Web site. Maintains and updates Web site content and statistics. Coordinates and converts information with program staff for display on the Web.
- Implements Web site policies and priorities. Chairs the Web Site Task Force and serves on the Marketing Program committee.
- Prepares departmental budget and project reports. Explores fund raising and marketing opportunities for support of Web site development.
- Trains and educates staff on creating and presenting information in formats easily convertible to the Web site. Promotes departmental awareness of Web site resources.
- Evaluates and makes recommendations for software, hardware, and related equipment purchases. Keeps abreast of relevant professional literature, attends professional conferences, and serves on external committees.
Job Scope:
Implements policy and procedures related to creating and maintaining the OHS Web site within the Society's and Web Site Task Force's guidelines and expectations. Contributes to the development of new concepts and long-range planning. Responsible for efficiency and revision of all operations and programs related to the Society's Web site. Job involves a high degree of complexity in a wide diversity of work situations. Performs duties with minimal supervision or direction, with awareness of OHS programs and public image, content and accuracy, and time-sensitive decisions. Partial responsibility for preparation and accountability for the web site budget.

- Professional, managerial and technical skills are required to perform essential job functions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to analyze and integrate varied and complex information from a wide range of sources.
- Ability to organize materials and work projects effectively.
- Works with Web Site Task Force to prioritize material for the Web site.
- Works with program staff on creating Web page layouts and graphic designs for mounting on the Web site. Graphic design capabilities.
- Evaluates software/hardware
- Follows instructions of supervisor and oversees/trains Web site work done by other staff members. Ability to meet deadlines in a reasonable time frame.
- Displays interpersonal skills and abilities to work well with wide range of program staff, assumes responsibility and displays initiative and flexibility. Strong oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of HTML, SGML, Windows 95, Unix, PERL, CGI, and API scripts. Ability to follow complex written or oral instructions, to work independently, to pay attention to detail while completing repetitive tasks, to manage time effectively, to promptly report problems to superiors, to use common office equipment, and to make prudent decisions independently.
Education and/or experience:
Required: Masters degree in History, Library Science, Computer Science, or related field, or two years extensive computer experience with bachelors degree. Considerable experience with computer applications, particularly related to graphic design and web site maintenance. Preferred: One year experience with web site management/administration, preferably in a Unix environment. Salary: $27,693 - 32,247.
