KEEP OUT! NO HACKERS ALLOWED!
LIBRARY SECURITY IN AN ELECTRONIC ENVIRONMENT
Calling all library directors, managers and department heads! Are you
looking for someone to explain "electronic security" in terms you can
understand? Do you have decisions to make, but can't seem to cut
through the jargon to grasp the issues? Then this TLA preconference is
for you!
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1998
9:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION PRECONFERENCE
(http://www.txla.org)
Come, learn about electronic security in a non-threatening manner. The
speaker, Bruce A. Shuman, is currently an Adjunct Professor in the
School of Library and Information Science at the University of South
Florida, Tampa, the editor of Haworth Press' journal, Library & Archival
Security, and the author of the upcoming book, Handbook of Library
Security and Safety (ALA Editions, 1998).
The TLA Automation & Technology Roundtable has developed this
preconference primarily for the non-technical librarian audience.
Secondarily, it can serve as an introduction to the subject for those
who are more technical. Mr. Shuman will explain (with a minimum of
jargon) issues involved in electronic security:
* Internet: the good news and the bad news
* Privacy
* System Vulnerability
* Electronic Library Security Audit
* Methods for Illegal Access
* Spying and Monitoring
* Viruses and Trojan Horses
* Spoofing
* Defenses and Countermeasures
* Network Integrity
* Authorization
* Proxy Protection
* Firewalls
* Encryption
* Costs and Constraints
By the end of the day, you will understand:
* the issues involved
* the levels of security available
* the advantages and disadvantages inherent in the most prevalent forms
of security used in libraries today
So, watch for the TLA conference program, and register for Keep Out! We
look forward to seeing you there!
