CD-ROM based Specialty databases

The Paul V. Galvin library at the Illinois Institute of Technology is
writing a proposal to fund the acquisition of a CD-ROM based specialty
database collection in the sciences (primarily engineering and
sciences (primarily engineering and chemistry). There is
enthusiastic local support from the faculty and we would like to know if 
other universities are pursuing or have direct experience with such
"avenues of information dissemination".
