Depending on how loaded its server is, Alta Vista will usually not
perform an exhaustive search of its database.  Its reports thus
fluctuate in exactly this way.  If you really want a thorough report,
your best bet is to search in the middle of the night when load is
low -- or keep submitting your search over and over.  Or use a
different search engine (I find Hotbot superior).

This is true even if you go to advanced search and click the
"precise count" button.
