We've had this same problem at Yale.
Our Workstation Support Specialists in the library systems office came up
with a pretty simple solution for our usual set ups, public and staff.
First off, we run NT, Netscape 4 +, and use McGill 2.5 or HostExplorer 6.
Now, here is what we do:
1. In NT, use the NT Explorer to delete the file types in NT for URL:TN3270
and URL:Telnet.
>From the menu bar select View, then Options, then File Types, then
URL:TN3270 and URL:Telnet. Delete them.
2. In Netscape, use the preferences dialog box to edit the file type
details for TN3270 and Telnet (not URL:TN3270 and URL:Telnet) to use the
TN3270 and Telnet clients that you want.
In the Netscape preferences dialog box, the URL:TN3270 and URL:Telnet
application types should be gone, and new application types for TN3270 and
Telnet should be there instead.
(If they are not, then in Netscape delete the URL:TN3270 and URL:Telnet
application types. Then go to a page with these file types on them, use the
links, and get an application error. Now the blank types should be listed
in the Netscape preferences dialog box for application types.)
>From the menu bar select Edit, then Preferences, then aplications, then
TN3270 and Telnet. Edit them. There is no need to use %1 or %2 or whatever.
This works.
