JOB DESCRIPTION
CONSULTANT
FY99 Salary Range: $38,301-49,263
Currently this position has an eight-step salary range, with placement
normally at Step 1. The CMRLS Personnel Committee is commissioning a
Compensation Study in FY99.
A supervisory professional position under the direction of the Regional
Administrator with primary responsibility for technology planning, and
training and advisory programs for CMRLS member libraries. Supervises
the CMRLS Technical Specialist.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Serves as a member of the regional management team for planning
and coordinating services to member libraries. Works with the
other consultants on collaborative CMRLS programs and projects.
Represents Administration as assigned.
2. With input from the Technical Specialist, assesses the needs for
technology training, advisory and support services and
recommends appropriate allocations of funds and staff time.
3. Works with the Technical Specialist to plan, coordinate, promote
and conduct workshops and training sessions in support of
continuing education in technology for member library staff.
4. Responds to questions and requests for advice, especially those
relating to library technology issues, from member librarians,
governing boards, support groups and individuals,
5. Develops, writes, administers and monitors grant proposals
relating to library technology
6. Promotes Regional services and contributes to Regional
publications, especially on library technology-related issues.
7. Keeps abreast of current library technology developments and
their potential impact upon member libraries and CMRLS.
8. Serves as regional representative on statewide and inter-Regional
technology issues, such as Regional Bibliographic Database and
Virtual Catalog projects. Works with other consultant(s) to
investigate, evaluate, and help to negotiate regional reference
database contracts.
9 Acts as implementation coordinator for and migration liaison with
the automated network, C/W MARS. Makes recommendations
regarding C/W MARS bibliographic database issues.

10. In collaboration with the other consultants, participates in
ongoing development and maintenance of the CMRLS website.
11. Attends meetings, workshops, conferences and training sessions
appropriate to the scope of the position.
12. Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of librarianship,
especially those relating to library technology issues and trends .
Ability to communicate effectively, in speech and in writing, with library
staff and members of library governing and support groups at all levels
of education, training and experience; both individually and in group
situations.
Ability to initiate, organize and self-direct work responsibilities.
Ability to supervise and motivate staff.
EDUCATION:
A Master of Library Science degree from a library school accredited by
the American Library Association. Five years professional (post-
graduate) library work, including some supervisory, Internet, training,
bibliographic database, office-LAN and PC experience, or equivalent
combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED: Demonstrable experience working with library computer
applications. Demonstrable instruction/training skills with individuals
and groups. DESIRABLE: Web master skills; experience working with
bibliographic database(s); MARC records; library automation project(s);
reference databases; project management.
NOTE: Job requires travel primarily in Central Massachusetts. (Staff
member must provide own transportation, mileage is reimbursable.)
