August 14, 1998
TITLE: Systems Librarian
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Library Systems in the University of Washington Libraries operates in a
dynamic, networked NT environment currently focused on providing new Web
based services to both users and library staff. The equipment environment
includes Dell Poweredge serves with over 200 Gigabytes of hardware RAID.
The main libraries have about 650 Pentium class PCs and this number will
expand by 250 machines in the near future as X-terminals are retired.
The major Systems initiative at present focuses on developing a dynamic
Web environment that brings together national and local Web resources.
This will be a major platform change from the locally built WILLOW
interface and offers many exciting opportunities for new services. The UW
Libraries run Innovative Interface systems to provide basic processing
services. Machine operation and almost all Innovative tasks are handled
by other departments. Library Systems is, however, active in integrating
the new Webpac into the overall service package.
The Systems Librarian is a beginning systems position which requires some
relevant technical experience but not necessarily within a systems
department. Library Systems currently has four librarians, four technical
staff, one office manager, and a number of part-time students. The
Systems Librarian reports to the Head, Distributed Computing Systems. New
Systems Librarians are offered training as appropriate and given
increasingly responsible assignments often in teams with Systems and other
library staff.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Assists in the planning and has significant responsibility for the
implementation of electronic information services to the public,
particularly through the use of PCs, NT networking and the Web. Works
with departmental Computer-Based Services Librarians as liaison from
systems.
2. Helps coordinate the delivery of catalog information with other
Web based resources.
3. Participates in the development of overall technology planning for
Library Systems.
4. Maintains an awareness of networking standards, technology and
national developments related to distributed computing environments
delivered through Microsoft NT. Tracks essential technologies and studies
their applicability in the local environment.
5. Participates in the analysis of the networked information needs of
end-users and library staff, coordinates and implements the design of
appropriate solutions.
6. May participate in staff or user education programs.
7. Participates in Libraries-wide committees, task forces, and teams
as appropriate.
8. Responsible for finding and installing tools and processes for Web
content creation and site management. Acquire, install, and maintain Web
development tools and utilities.
9. Assists in the support of library database systems as required,
including the provision of Web access through specialized APIs.
10. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties
as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association required or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree.
2. Some technical computer experience in an academic or other complex
library, preferably one running NT based network, and Web services.
3. Good oral and written communication skills.
4. Demonstrated user-centered service philosophy and proven ability
to work with a wide variety of people including Libraries users and all
levels of staff.
5. Some technical Web experience including the creation and
maintenance of CGI or similar scripts.
6. Must be knowledgeable about current trends in information
technology particularly those relating to NT and the World Wide Web.
7. Ability to function well in a changing environment, to work
effectively within a large complex organization and to exercise initiative
required.
8. Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc. desirable.
9. Experience with Microsoft Access or other relational database
systems desirable.
SALARY: $35,000/year minimum. Starting salary dependent on background and
experience.
BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, the Vanguard Group,
SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at
the rate of 12 working days per year. Excellent medical, dental and life
insurance plans. No state or local income tax.
