I think an even better example are the geographic subdivisions. There
are subject headings that allow for geographic subdivisions, and for
that you refer to a separate authority file.

That is what I meant by multiple parents.  This, and the other replies
(thanks, all!) have clarified things considerably.  I'd be curious for
pointers to descriptions of efforts to do more of this kind of
cross-linking in digital catalogs.
