In our corporate setting this is exactly what we do: support internal
"professional profiles" on our intranet but with NO visibility on the public
web site. The company isn't in the business of supplying (and policing) a
public forum for its employees.

People are free to put personal material in their professional profile area
(within the same bounds as any other material in the intranet). Many people
have personal ISP accounts and actually use their professional profiles to
describe current work projects, skills, etc. and then point to their
ISP-based pages for more personal material.
