DALNET Systems Librarian
Wayne State University seeks candidates with credentials to qualify for
the rank of Librarian I or II for a full-time position as a DALNET
Systems Librarian. This is a contract position renewable annually one
year in advance.
Wayne State University (WSU) is the host site for the Detroit Area
Library Network (DALNET) Online System. This computer system is shared
by 21 academic, public and professional libraries and provides access to
more than eight million items through an online catalog of 4.5 million
records and index/abstract databases with over 13 million records.
Currently, library staff in the WSU Technical Services and Systems
Department manage the DALNET Online System and support its daily
operations.
Contract negotiations are in process to replace the NOTIS software
currently used by DALNET with a Horizon client/server system. DALNETs
system migration project is expected to take two years. It will provide
the foundation for a metropolitan information hub for the member
libraries that includes digitized special collections as well as
traditional library catalogs and indexes. For more information, see

Wayne State University is a Carnegie Research University I with a

it the 21st largest university in the United States. The university is
located in an attractive urban setting, surrounded by museums, theaters
and corporate offices easily accessible from several Detroit-area
interstate freeways and Canada. The University Library System includes
five libraries, media services, the University Press, a graduate library
and information science program and the Office for Teaching and
Learning.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This DALNET Systems Librarian position is primarily responsible for
providing technical and professional user services to DALNET
institutions in the public services components of the shared integrated
library system. Those components include the OPAC with its indexes,
Z39.50 links, and Web interface; the Interlibrary Loan/resource sharing
system; and shared index/abstract databases. This position is part of a
team of two systems librarians who support all modules of the integrated
library system and report to the Assistant Director for Library
Information Systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Technical and professional user services to DALNET institutions in the
following public services components: OPAC, index/abstract databases,
ILL/resource sharing, and access to full-text, image and multimedia
databases. Emphasis during the first two years will be on migrating
from Ameritechs NOTIS system to the Horizon client/server system.
Includes testing, day-to-day troubleshooting, researching solutions to
complex needs/problems.
§ Lead implementor for WSU Libraries Web interface to the DALNET Online
System.
§ Project leader for Z39.50 connectivity for the DALNET Online System.
§ Primary technical liaison between DALNET and vendors for licensed
electronic library resources.
§ Plans and delivers staff training to DALNET member institutions.
§ Participates in developing system requirements, evaluation, and
testing for enhancements to the DALNET Online System.
§ Travels to DALNET libraries in the metropolitan Detroit area will be
required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school; some
professional experience in library automation; experience creating,
implementing and managing Web pages, including knowledge of HTML, CGI
scripts, PERL; demonstrated teaching ability; excellent verbal and
written communication skills; ability to work in a team environment; and
credentials to qualify for a Librarian I or II classification with the
University Library System.
Qualifications for a Librarian I Rank:
§ Beginning professional classification.
Qualifications for a Librarian II Rank:
§ At least three years professional experience.
§ Demonstrated ability to carry out competently the range of
professional library functions pertaining to the primary assigned area
of librarianship.
§ Evidence of the ability to work well independently, to make sound
decisions and to have constructive/productive interaction with
colleagues.
§ Potential for continuing professional growth.
Preferred: Experience with Horizon or other client/server library
system; knowledge of MARC record formats; experience with Windows NT,
UNIX, Z39.50 configuration; experience in systems or public services.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
$33,000 minimum for Librarian I, $36,000 minimum for Librarian II, 22
days vacation per year, university holidays and excellent fringe
benefits, including TIAA/CREF or Fidelity, tuition assistance for
employees and family members and relocation assistance.
