Dear Readers:
The OCLC Institute offers "Understanding and Using Metadata," a 2-1/2
day seminar on the OCLC campus, Dublin, Ohio, on the following dates:
August 31-Sept. 2 (M-W)
September 9-11 (W-F)
September 21-23 (M-W)
*****
The reduced, early-bird tuition rate for these seminars has been
extended to August 19, 1998. Register now to take advantage of

After participating in this seminar you will be able to:
* Understand the foundations of resource description and its
application to the Internet
* Understand emerging Web standards such as XML, RDF, and the Dublin
Core and their application in resource description systems
* Evaluate your information management needs and determine the
appropriateness of metadata for a variety of applications
* Use the Dublin Core metadata in a real-world application
After a detailed introduction to the concepts of metadata and the Dublin
Core, you will work in small project teams using the OCLC Institute's
Metadata Lab to create metadata records for a real-world collection.
You will analyze user needs and information resources, create metadata
records, and critically evaluate aspects of resource description,
indexing, searching, retrieval, display, and access in an operating
metadata system. Project teams report their results and evaluations and
discuss next steps in a plenary session.
This is a practical, intensive, expertly guided hands-on learning
experience.
