We have had great success with scanning traditional slides using the adapter
that comes with the HP Scanjet 6100C flatbed scanner. We scale the image up
about 500% during the scan process to get a good sized image. I would think
you could scan transparencies without too much trouble, but have never tried
to scan negatives.....

>Speaking of digitizing picture collections, does anyone have experience
with scanners that can scan the images directly from transparencies? We are
planning to put up some samples of pictures from our historical archives,
but a lot of the best pictures in our files seem to be either large old
slides, or negatives. It would be great if there was a way to scan them
right in, without getting them printed first.
