Slide or negative scanners

Speaking of digitizing picture collections, does anyone have experience
with scanners that can scan the images directly from transparencies?  We
are planning to put up some samples of pictures from our historical
archives, but a lot of the best pictures in our files seem to be either
large old slides, or negatives.  It would be great if there was a way to
scan them right in, without getting them printed first.
