Although I prefer Photoshop, for Windows PaintShop Pro is perfect for doing a
wide variety of tasks, especially those that are relatively routine
(resizing, conversion, etc.): it's fairly straightforward, at least to me.
I also think PaintShop Pro handles fonts a little better than Photoshop.
Pretty amazed by the package considering it's only $99 compared to the $299+
academic price for Photoshop (almost $500 retail). You can download an
evaluation copy at

For Mac, I've used GraphicConverter: a little more limited, but still pretty
good considering it's shareware. It's available at

Hope this helps,

Subject: Best image software
Hello list,
What do you think is the best all-around software for
manipulating images for ultimate use on web pages?
By this I mean something oriented to producings gifs
and jpegs from all manner of source formats (TIFF,
PICT, EPS, etc etc) without great losses in quality,
something that lets you resize, crop, adjust contrast,
and so on without requiring you to have a master's
degree in graphic arts or optical sciences.
In a word, something that is both powerful and
easy to use (ya, ya, I know) and oriented toward
producing web-ready files. What works best
for you?
Thanks in advance,
Joe Schallan
