SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN FOR
INTERNET TECHNOLOGIES
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Head of Systems
Development, this new position has responsibility for implementing
Internet technologies in a digital library environment. Working
closely with the Library's new Digital Services Center, this position
participates in developing creative electronic services designed
around networked-based multimedia resources. As part of the Library's
Web Team, utilizes appropriate technologies such as CGI scripting to
create innovative Web-based programs that enhance library resources
and services. The Systems Librarian for Internet Technologies is
responsible for administration of locally loaded databases and
interfaces (SilverPlatter ERL/WebSpirs). This person maintains an
in-depth knowledge of emerging Internet and digital technologies and
information retrieval standards, assists in Unix/Web servers system
administration, participates in reference and consulting services
provided through the Digital Services Center, serves on library-wide
committees, task forces, and teams, and has a subject-based collection
development assignment. This position may be subject to on-call
availability on evenings and weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA Accredited Master's degree in library
science; knowledge of Unix operating system; in-depth knowledge of
HTML; understanding of Internet technologies and standards; excellent
written and verbal communication skills; excellent analytical and
problem-solving skills.
Preferred: Experience with Perl in CGI scripting; experience with
Web server configuration and; management; understanding of SGML.
Candidate will be asked to give a 10-15 minute presentation on a
relevant topic.
SALARY and BENEFITS: $35,000 Good benefits package
LIBRARY: Overall library staff of 26 librarians and 46 support staff
serve campus community and significant off-campus programs with
collections of 700,000 volumes and 6,500 current subscriptions. The
library uses Innovative Interfaces system. One of the six public
doctoral level universities in Virginia, Old Dominion University has
17,400 students and 623 full-time faculty; in addition to the main
campus, 3 regional higher education centers, and a planned Virginia
Beach campus, the university provides an extensive distance education
program.
