Confusing Log Entry

I have a confusing log entry.

Our server logs report a certain number of hits
for /gclc/ and a certain number for /gclc/index.html.
Why is this if those two URL's are retrieving the same
file? I'm supposed to report the number of hits on our
opening page. What stat do I use?
