     The University and The Library
     Innovation in the use of information technology is the norm and
     is deeply integrated into the administrative, technical services,
     and public services operations of the Libraries. Network
     connectivity is ubiquitous and includes public access to the
     local INNOPAC system (http://roger.ucsd.edu), to InfoPath (the
     campuswide and internet information system developed and operated
     by the Libraries; http://www.ucsd.edu), and to the University of
     California MELVYL system (UC systemwide catalog, abstract and
     index databases, and full text databases;
     http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu). Remote access to the collections is
     supported by Ariel and the Library Express document delivery
     systems. The Libraries deliver access to very large datasets via
     the Social Science Database system and provide World Wide
     Web-based services. The Libraries regularly provide beta testing
     for new systems and implement new technologies; current projects
     include AVANTI - a secure document delivery system utilizing the
     Web, Database Advisor - a selection tool to guide users to UCSD
     databases, and the University of California Digital Library. The
     UCSD Libraries, a member of the Association of Research
     Libraries, consist of the University Library, the Art &
     Architecture Library, the Biomedical and Medical Center
     Libraries, the Center for Magnetic Recording Research Library,
     the International Relations and Pacific Studies Library, the
     Music Library, the Science & Engineering Library, the Scripps
     Institution of Oceanography Library, and the Undergraduate
     Library. The combined collections total over 2.0 million volumes.

     The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has distinguished
     academic programs. The main academic units are five undergraduate
     colleges, a division of graduate studies and research, the School
     of Medicine, the School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of
     Oceanography, the Gradate School of International Relations and
     Pacific Studies, and University Extension. UCSD has an enrollment
     of approximately 18,400 and employs 3,900 faculty and other
     academicians, and over 11,900 non-academic staff. It ranks sixth
     nationally in annual receipt of federal funds for research and
     development and is one of fifty-two members of the Association of
     American Universities.

     Science & Engineering Library
     The Science & Engineering Library's (http://scilib.ucsd.edu)
     services and collections support instruction and research for six
     academic departments representing the fields of chemistry,
     physics, mathematics, computer science, and programs in the
     School of Engineering. Its clientele includes 500 faculty and
     academic staff, over 700 graduate students, and 3,600
     undergraduates. The library's collection contains 182,000 volumes
     and 2,300 current serials; staff include 4 FTE librarians, 7 FTE
     support staff, and 5 FTE student assistants; materials
     expenditures for 1996/97 were over $1 million. The library
     provides a full range of public services. A satellite library
     with 1.75 FTE staff serves as a specialized information center
     for the Center for Magnetic Recording Research and its sponsors.

     Responsibilities of the Position
     The Science and Engineering Library seeks a creative individual
     with a strong user services orientation to join their reference
     team. Under the general direction of the Head of the Science and
     Engineering Library, the incumbent serves as a member of the
     Science and Engineering Library's dynamic reference team and has
     lead responsibility for developing, coordinating, and
     implementing an innovative approach for the Library's
     instructional outreach program. Works collaboratively with
     Science and Engineering Library staff to determine faculty and
     student information needs. Develops and provides group and
     individual instruction and training for students, staff and
     faculty in the use of library resources and information
     technologies. Takes responsibility for coordinating the
     development of instructional materials. Selects materials in a
     subject area to be determined according to experience, shares
     responsibility for reference desk coverage and for development of
     the Science and Engineering Library's extensive web site. Stays
     abreast of developments in user instruction and outreach and
     serves as a professional resource in these areas for the
     department.

     Qualifications
     Required: MLS degree or equivalent; demonstrated teaching
     ability; excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
     demonstrated analytical and organizational skills; knowledge of,
     and experience with, electronic resources in the sciences and
     with desktop and internet applications; knowledge of relevant
     print and electronic reference resources. Candidate must be team
     oriented, flexible, have a strong commitment to excellence in
     service, and be able to work both independently and
     collaboratively in a complex, changing environment.

     Desirable: experience in a science/engineering library;
     background in the physical sciences or engineering; 2-3 years
     reference experience; relevant collection development experience;
     experience with web authoring tools; prior success in developing
     an innovative program. Appointment at the Associate Librarian
     rank requires substantial relevant experience and superior
     qualifications. UCSD Librarians are expected to participate in
     librarywide planning and to be active professionally.

     Benefits
     Librarians at UCSD are academic appointees and are entitled to
     sixteen hours per month of annual leave, eight hours per month of
     sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other
     perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The
