The University and The Library
Innovation in the use of information technology is the norm and
is deeply integrated into the administrative, technical services,
and public services operations of the Libraries. Network
connectivity is ubiquitous and includes public access to the
local INNOPAC system (http://roger.ucsd.edu), to InfoPath (the
campuswide and internet information system developed and operated
by the Libraries; http://www.ucsd.edu), and to the University of
California MELVYL system (UC systemwide catalog, abstract and
index databases, and full text databases;
http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu). Remote access to the collections is
supported by Ariel and the Library Express document delivery
systems. The Libraries deliver access to very large datasets via
the Social Science Database system and provide World Wide
Web-based services. The Libraries regularly provide beta testing
for new systems and implement new technologies; current projects
include AVANTI - a secure document delivery system utilizing the
Web, Database Advisor - a selection tool to guide users to UCSD
databases, and the University of California Digital Library. The
UCSD Libraries, a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, consist of the University Library, the Art &
Architecture Library, the Biomedical and Medical Center
Libraries, the Center for Magnetic Recording Research Library,
the International Relations and Pacific Studies Library, the
Music Library, the Science & Engineering Library, the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography Library, and the Undergraduate

academic programs. The main academic units are five undergraduate
colleges, a division of graduate studies and research, the School
