Communicator 4.03 problems with Java

I have recently upgraded to Communicator 4.03 (the full set) and have 
recently started running into problems loading pages with Java 
applets.  My machine is a 486/66 running off the library network.  
When I have this problem, it generally results from going to a page, 
seeing a message that Java is loading, and then freezing up.

Is there any way I can avoid this problem by changing my 
configuration?

Is there anything that I should look for in order to diagnose the 
problem?
