It is not only the physical size of the file, but the increase in the
tagging.  With each new tag the browser rendering engine must store new
information about how the page is designed and go through more information
when it actually goes to draw the page.  In the original question, the
browser might be smart enough to combine the two FONT tags, but likely
not.
