RE: Alta Vista coverage much smaller than thought. At
http://www.computer.org/pubs/expert/1997/trends/x1008/x1008.htm, the
IEEE Expert Online provides links to a couple of good articles online.
Michael Mauldin, who developed Lycos, presents a brief history of Web
search services and describes how search engines such as Lycos perform
their tasks. Lots of good detail. Erik Selberg and Oren Etzioni, who
developed the MetaCrawler Softbot, describe how their system exploits
the results from other search engines to provide a comprehensive set of
documents in response to a query.
