JAVA in the Morning: the Dawn of New Technologies

Tuesday, May 6, 1997 -- 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
Starr Auditorium at the Kennedy School of Government
Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

The Java programming language has been heralded as the biggest
breakthrough in Internet technology since the Web. With its
object-orientated structure, stripped down code, and built-in security
features, Java offers the Web developer an easy solution for producing
fully interactive web sites. Animated graphics, pop-up windows,
spreadsheets, word processors, and all sorts of other programs can now
be used in conjunction with a Web server. The Java language accomplishes
all this using "applets"--small programs which are downloaded from a
server with an HTML document and run on a supportive browser. The
success of this language can be attested to by the various Java spinoffs
which have been developed: Habanero, Mirimba, and others.

We invite you to a half-day event to learn with us what the current
state-of-the-art Java technology encompasses. Discover its applications.
Learn how Java has changed the face of client- server and Internet
development. See what the future holds. Representatives from Sun
Microsystems, and a member of the MIT Information Systems Department
will bring us up to date and share their insights about the potential of
this technology. A light buffet breakfast will be served.

NEASIS wishes to acknowledge the generous support of the the John F.
Kennedy School of Government, Sun Microsystems, and MIT's Information
Systems Department for making this program possible.

Local Travel Directions

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Take the MBTA Red Line to the Harvard Square
stop. Go out via the Harvard Square exit, turn left and proceed down
J.F. Kennedy Street. The Kennedy School of Government is four blocks
down on the right, at the corner of Eliot and J.F. Kennedy Streets

FROM THE NORTH -- Take Route 93 South into Boston. Take the exit for
Storrow Drive, Cambridge.

Follow Storrow Drive, keeping to the right (along the Charles River),
until the exit marked Harvard Square/Cambridge. Take this short exit to
the traffic light, go right over the bridge (Charles River). Continue
straight on JFK Street through the 1st traffic light (at Memorial
Drive). Continue through 2nd light, Eliot St. (large parking garage at
corner of Eliot and JFK, a good place to park) and through the 3rd
light, Mt. Auburn St., until you come to the 4th light; keep left. This
will put you in the center of Harvard Square. At this light take the
hard left, and after doing so, move quickly to the right lane. After
passing an alley/street to your right (it appears quickly) and then
passing a small brick-covered corner park, also on the right, bear right
onto Brattle Street. Go up one block and take a right onto Church
Street; there is a parking lot on your left.

FROM THE SOUTH -- take Route 3 (Southeast Expressway) north from the
intersection with Route 128 (I-95). In Boston take the exit for Storrow
Drive.

Follow the directions from above starting with "Follow Storrow
Drive...."

FROM THE WEST -- Take Route 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) east. Get off at
the Cambridge-Allston exit and follow the signs for Cambridge bearing to
the right. As you come off the Turnpike exit, a 10-story hotel is on
your right. Begin to move to the left lanes as you pass the hotel. There
is a traffic light at the corner of the hotel. Go through this light,
but be prepared to make a left, just before the bridge ahead of you. DO
NOT CROSS OVER THE BRIDGE. Instead, take that left before the bridge. Go
past the next set of lights (Western Avenue). You will be on an entrance
ramp leading onto Storrow Drive with very rapid traffic (50+ mph).
Follow Storrow Drive 1/2 mile to the first exit marked Harvard
Square/Cambridge on your right.

Follow the directions from above starting with "Follow Storrow
Drive...."

GARAGES AND PARKING LOTS -- Church Street Parking Lot is close to
Harvard Square and the least expensive. After you have mad a right onto
Brattle Street, go up one block and take a right onto Church Street. The
log is on your left. Other lots and garages are available such as the
University Place parking garage off Mount Auburn Street and the Harvard
Square Garage located opposite Belfer on Eliot Street. Follow signs to
parking areas.

STARR AUDITORIUM is located on the 2nd floor of the Belfer Building at
the Kennedy School of Government. Belfer is on the corner of Eliot and
J.F. Kennedy Streets.
