     The SLAC Library, the first Web site in the United States, 
manages the SPIRES-HEP consortium which provides a suite of 
information resources to the international high-energy physics 
community.

Position Description:

     The Systems Librarian will be responsible, under the general 
direction of the Head of Technical Information Services, for the 
management, development, and support of the SLAC Technical 
Information Services UNIX-based automated systems and 
databases.  Technical Information Services includes the Library, 
Technical Publications, and the Archives, all of which are involved 
in providing leading-edge information services for the world wide 
high-energy physics community.   The System Librarian will 
analyze, plan, implement, maintain, and develop systems and 
services and will take a leadership role in ensuring effective 
integration of information transfer, processing, storage and access 
across a complex platform and database environment.  The Systems 
Librarian will also work closely with the SPIRES databases 
manager to ensure the smooth and efficient sharing of data, 
upgrades, and information among the consortium member sites.  

Skills/experience:

     Minimum of two years experience in programming or systems 
analysis in a UNIX environment with either an M.L.S. or a degree in 
Computer Science.  Equivalent experience may be 
substituted for degree requirements.  Demonstrated experience in 
system support for a large heterogeneous UNIX environment.  At 
least two year's experience with library automated systems or with 
electronic publishing in a distributed platform environment.  
Working knowledge of at least two of the following UNIX 
implementations: AIX/6000 v3, SunOS, NeXT, Ultrix, Solaris 2.x, 
HPUX, Irix or OSF/1.  Experience with networking concepts and 
tools including FTP, telnet, NFS, etc.  Experience with Internet 
access and delivery systems such as the World Wide Web, WAIS, 
etc.  Demonstrated ability to work well with a wide variety of 
technical and non-technical people.  Excellent verbal and written 
communication skills and good judgment.

Compensation and Benefits:  
The anticipated hiring range is $3606 - $5249 per month.
