Linda,
Whilst I haven't seen the 60 Minutes segment (Australia has their own
version of the show), I wrote a paper on that topic for University, which
I'm expecting back any day. It is true that librarians are needed as much
for determining the authority of internet publications as much as any
other publication. The problem is in educating the public to that fact.
In my opinion most users are not aware of the input into determining
acquisitions by library staff - they know that a publication in a
library will be genuine and many cannot differentiate between a
publication in a library and one on the internet. Anyway the paper did
not attempt to draw conclusions as it was primarily a literature review.
I can append a copy to you if you're interested.
Regards, Lisa.
