Anyone interested in seeing the behind-the-scenes at O'Reilly and
Associates, checking out the Sonoma County WIne Library and touring a
winery? Well, those of you attending ALA and staying through Monday,
June 30 will have that chance.
I have put together an itinerary combining my interests and professional
areas of specialization. For about six years I was librarian at the
Sonoma County Wine Library, and now I am the Internet Librarian.
There is no charge for this tour. You provide your transportation. Get
to O'Reilly and Associates in Sebastopol by 1:00 PM on Monday, June 30.
Sebastopol is about 50 miles north of San Francisco.
Itinerary
Tour of O"Reilly and Associates 1-2 PM
and Songline Studios.
Tour of Sonoma County Wine Library 2:30-3 PM
Healdsburg, CA
Tour of either Quivira Vineyards or 3:30-4:30 PM
Seghesio Winery in the Healdsburg Area
We'll recommend some spots in the Healdsburg for a nice wine country
dinner, or you can return to San Francisco after the winery tour.
O'Reilly & Associates (http://www.ora.com/index.html) is the leading
publisher of books for UNIX, X, the Internet, and other open systems, as
well as a pioneer in online publishing. They also publish the leading
web server for Windows NT and Windows 95, and are defining new paradigms
for how to develop and sell software on and for the Internet. Dale
Dougherty, (http://webreview.com/universal/staff/dale.html)will lead the
tour at O'Reilly and Associates. Dale is the President & CEO, Songline
Studios and Publisher, Web Review, has been associated with O'Reilly
and Associates for some time.
The Sonoma County Wine Library (http://www.sonoma.lib.ca.us/wine.html)
is a special service and collection of the Sonoma County Library.
Funded in part by the 140 wineries in Sonoma County, it is housed in the
Healdsbrug Regional Library, a Sonoma County branch. It serves as a
business and technical library to the area wine industry as well as an
historical archive and a general browsing collection on wine. Zita
Eastman, the Wine Librarian, will show us around the Sonoma County Wine
Library.
Quivira (http://winegrowersofdrycreek.com/quivira/main1.htm)and Seghesio
(http://www.winegrowersofdrycreek.com/seghesio/main.htm) are two great
wineries in the Northern Sonoma County area. Both make, among other
wines some wonderful Zinfandels from the Dry Creek area, arguably the
best patch of vineyard land for Zinfandel in the world. At the time of
this writing, I have yet to nail down one or the other. Quivira will
give us a tour. Grady Wann, their winemaker, is unable to lead the
tour. He'll be in San Diego for the American Society for Enology and
Viticulture's annual convention. I will talk to Ted Seghesio later
tonight to see if he can tour us, but if he cannot, we will go with
Quivira, with a good tour guide, but, alas, not Grady.
This should be fun way to see a bit of California high tech and wine
country, and get away, but not really far away from libraries and webs
for an afternoon.
I tailked to Roy Tenant before posting this, and he said he's probably
coming. I will take the names of the first 15 to reply directly to me.
If I don't get at lest 10, I'll scrub the mission.
