ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION
POSITION: Systems Librarian
DATE POSITION AVAILABLE: July 1, 1997
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor (tenure track), $28,000 minimum
RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):
1. Plan, develop, implement, and manage the library's local area networks
and other technological applications.
2. Recommend software and hardware for library's systems.
3. Provide routine maintenance.
4. Monitor LAN performance.
5. Identify and evaluate new technology.
6. Train library faculty and staff to effectively use electronic
resources and new technology.
7. Assist with general reference service as assigned, including evening
and weekend hours.
8. Serve as liaison with Computer Center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Required:
a. MIS or ALA-accredited MLS
b. Knowledge of microcomputers, operating systems, CD-ROM LAN
technology and networking.
c. Experience with installation and management of Novell, TCP/IP,
and NT 4.0.
d. Working knowledge of NOTIS.
e. Ability to work effectively with colleagues.
f. Scholarly and professional competence.
2. Desirable:
a. Previous systems experience.
b. Previous academic library experience.
c. Previous experience with NOTIS.
DESCRIPTION OF THE LIBRARY: The Library has a total of 24 staff members,
including 14 professional employees. Its collection comprises more than
313,000 bound volumes, over 101,000 microform equivalents, more than
333,000 government documents, and over 5,900 media items. The Library
includes an online catalog, an Internet lab, a CD-ROM LAN, a large
manuscripts collection, a media center, and branches in Shreveport and
Leesville. The building, completed and occupied in 1972, is an attractive
modern building of three floors with about 94,000 square feet of space and
ample parking facilities. Watson Library is a member of the Louisiana
Online University Information System, with connections to most academic
libraries in the State.
DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIVERSITY: Northwestern State University, with an
enrollment of over 9,000 students, is located on a 916-acre tract in
historically rich Natchitoches, the oldest permanent settlement in the
Louisiana Purchase. Founded in 1714, Natchitoches is 70 miles southeast
of Shreveport and 50 miles northwest of Alexandria. The University's
major departments include Education, Business, Nursing, and the Louisiana
Scholars' College, the State's limited enrollment liberal arts program.
