FILT4LIB is NOT a good idea.  What we have been witnessing (in all
its ugliness) is a profession trying to find consensus on right action.
Most of the technical issues are transitory to the point of being almost
inconsequential.  The issue of what subset of the Internet should be
included in the library's mission, on the other hand, is central to our
future.

Some librarians are going to stand up for unrestricted access to
everything on the Internet and some of those are going to lose their
jobs.  Some boards are going to support their librarians and lose
their public taxpayer support.  Some libraries are going to fall into the 
control of groups who, having achieved success censoring pornography,
will censor political thought, art and literature.

A call for restraint is justified, but lets not marginalize such a critical
issue by moving it out of the mainstream.
