Here is one way busy librarians can reduce the file size of their gifs
without learning image editing software: GifWizard offers a free online
utility that lets you submit the URL of a gif file and then shows you how
the image would look at lesser color depths. You can then save the image
at the reduced bit depth that still has a satisfactory level of image
quality for your purposes. I think people will be amazed at the number of
gifs that you can reduce from 8 bit to 4 bit color while maintaining a
tolerable level of image degradation for many web purposes. The file size
savings resulting from an 8 to 4 bit depth adjustment can be very
worthwhile, depending on the original size of the gif.

The URL for GifWizard is http://www.gifwizard.com.
