I am using PowerPoint for Office 97 and it does support GIF file input. When I installed Office I selected Custom Installation and asked that all graphics filters be installed. Supported formats include Photo-CD, PNG, GIF, JPEG, EPS etc. I don't remember if version 4.0 supported all of these types.
