Although I've no direct experience with virtual library image analysis,
I appreciate your concerns and the points you bring up.
I would suggest you might want to contact the folks at the Los Alamos
Labs library. Heard their report on their virtual library project at
last fall's SLA workshop in Albuquerque. They have apparently done an
incredible job of scanning for both image and OCR their enormous
collection of tech reports, for Web access availability throughout the
lab site. They've also got a big cooperative venture with the academic
libraries in the region, with some pretty sophisticated local database
implementations.
Seems like they've already done quite a bit of work on inventing this
particular wheel.
