NEWS FROM RLG:
DATABASES NOW ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB

Eureka is now available on the World Wide Web as well as via
telnet. As of January 6, 1997, all existing Eureka accounts
have access to both Web and telnet versions.

The largest database available through Eureka on the Web is
the RLIN Bibliographic Database, a combined catalog
representing more than 250 university libraries, museums,
archives, and other entities. Among its more than 25 million
titles, this database includes unique elements such as
United Nations cataloging, the de facto national archival
database of almost half a million records, and more than a
million records for pre-LP sound recordings. Rich in all
languages, scripts, and subject areas, the RLIN
Bibliographic Database is a key resource for scholars.

Eureka on the Web also provides access to more than two
dozen other files, including the English Short Title
catalog, Bibliography of the History of Art, and the History
of Science and Technology.

On the Web, Eureka offers single-click access from any
record to related authors, titles, or subjects; export of
search results for e-mail, printing, or import into standard
bibliography programs; and direct one-click access to
electronic documents as such documents are cataloged--with
more than 3,400 included at the end of 1996, and many more
on the way. Pricing, availability, and database access are
the same for Eureka whether on the Web or via telnet.

Eureka on the Web is the basis for a number of future
Research Libraries Group initiatives in a variety of areas
including Internet-based electronic document delivery and
digital collections. Two dozen members of The Research
Libraries Group, Inc. began using Eureka on the Web in late
1996. A five-member Eureka/Web Advisory Group is working
with RLG staff to fine-tune Eureka on the Web. The new
system will be modified periodically based on advisory group
recommendations and user feedback.

For more information about Eureka on the Web, including
actual demonstration search sessions, connect to RLG's
Website at http://www.rlg.org/eurekaweb.html. For more
information about Eureka search accounts for individuals,
departments, or campuswide use, send e-mail to
