Roberta's description of the library as a
social/informational/personal locus of the community is very
exciting.  I would say, at its best, that is what the library does.  (We
all know libraries that should be there but aren't.)

Another thought from ALA midwinter (and then I gotta scuttle
back to a pile of work left over from the conference!): it has
become increasingly obvious  that there are many interesting,
involved, engaged librarians out there in LibraryLand, people
who understand what will keep us here in 20 years, and for the
most part they are not playing leadership roles in ALA.  This is
not to denigrate the folks who are participating in LITA or on
ALA Council or on committees such as MARBI or divisions such
as RUSA, but to say that overall, ALA experiences a generational
gap (which is not necessarily a function of age) in its leadership. 
Just an observation...
