Why we won't be here in 20 years

Libraries, especially those with large collections, must begin to turn
inward, and utilize their vast, untapped resources, in whatever format.
Because of the time involved in assigning subject headings, for years
libraries have applied the traditional "rule of three" (three subject
headings per record). Scanning tables of contents is one way to enhance
access to materials WE ALREADY HAVE. Search out those keyword-rich
materials that existed long before our online systems. Offer enhanced
access to materials only to your library patrons, if necessary (we have
to keep those kids coming to our universities, right? ) Have cataloging
staff assist with virtual reference. How? Say your library sets up an
interface for online help in a virtual library world. Use avatars both
for yourself and your online patron. Said avatar patron has a research
request, which previously could only be fulfilled by laborious searching
of the stacks. Avatar librarian requests assistance ; cataloger or other
librarian takes hand held scanner to the stacks, goes to the appropriate
area, and scans in possible avenues of research. Avatar patron sees
something he/ she likes, and requests it via online I.L.L. Doesn't this
concept beat the pants off any researcher wallowing around in the vast
morass of the Web? ;-)
