Editing Netscape Resources -Reply

Netscape has changed the coding techniques within Navigator in
versions after 3.01. Because of this, the old advice on editing the
executable will not work with 3.02, 3.03, and all 4.0 versions. Netscape
and Microsoft both have administration kits for customizing browser
installation and configuration. This is probably a simpler route for most
sites to take. Netscape charges for their admin kit; Microsoft's is free (for
the time being at least).

Here's a section from the document "Editing Netscape for Public
Access Computers", by Carole Leita, at
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu:8000/NS/, which suggests that changes to
newer software may need to be made under WinNT in order to make
them
stick:

"Note: We used Visual C++ to edit the Windows 3.11, 16 bit versions
of Netscape 2.01 and 3 using the Windows 95 operating system. When
we
tried to edit the Windows 95, 32 bit versions of Netscape 2.01 and 3
we discovered it wouldn't save the changes. We found that Visual C++
would make the changes to the 32 bit versions of Netscape 2.01 and 3
only if it was running on the Windows NT operating system! Please see
Microsoft's Knowledgebase Article Q139030 for an explanation of sorts
as to why."

The whole document is well worth reading, and is linked to from the
web4lib Reference Center.
