Some examples I have found useful in explaining the web:
"Using the web is like reading an encyclopedia and seeing text in bold or
italic. You know that there is an entry on that word elsewhere. With the
web you reach out and "tap" the word and the entry appears on the screen."
"The web is like publishing. You have everything from the revolutionaries
printing off mimeograph fliers by lantern in the jungle, pimply faced 'zine
editors copying their publication at Kinko's, scholarly periodicals,
reference tools, trash literature, quality art books and the local free
weekly. Just no catalog."
