Is "www" desirable in web site URL?

I read, on this list, some time ago, that convention SHOULD be www to
indicate the site was for internet access, and anything else for
intranet access. It stirred things up then. New users, old issues.
          BTW, I don't recollect a hard consensus.

The main advantage is retaining consistency and tradition in naming
schemes. It does let the reader know that materials down that directory
are explcitly related to the organization's web presence, though the fact
they're using a browser does that too.. :) But, to my understanding,
it's primarily a "grammar" and "ettiquite" thing.
