I have tried several of the line checking programs that have
been    suggested but they has all requested URL's to check
and won't accept just    a file name. Is there any program that
will check a file on one's hard    drive for the links it contains?

I'm sure there are.  But even if there aren't, just put the file up
on your server until it is checked.  Then pull it back.  Or leave
a copy there and put it in a restricted directory so the spiders
won't find it.
