Is "www" desirable in web site URL?

The main advantage is retaining consistency and tradition in naming 
schemes.  It does let the reader know that materials down that directory 
are explcitly related to the organization's web presence, though the fact 
they're using a browser does that too..  :)  But, to my understanding, 
it's primarily a "grammar" and "ettiquite" thing.
